Glass Blowing and Lampwork

Today I popped down to Bermondsey in London to visit the Peter Layton Gallery, near the Fashion and Textiles museum; as there was a schedule of demonstrations by Davide Penso and Peter Layton’s staff.  It was fascinating to see the Glass blowers working on large pieces of glass creating colourful and vibrant vessels, of a substantial scale. There were glass kiln’s blazing along with powerful torches to help with the process of creating the pieces.

It was also great to see Davide’s demonstrations on creating hollow beads and wine glasses with fine stems.  Davide had come especially to the gallery from Italy, to show the specialised techniques.  It was very interesting to see how quickly glass pieces of jewellery can be formed using a torch, steel rods, and specific tools.
